The most common answer to that question is they come from your pets skin. But they have to come from somewhere before that. You can also find fleas in bushes, trees and even grass lawns. You will see more fleas in the warmer months than in winter months. But it is important to take precautions for fleas because they can be a real problem in the start of the spring and the start of summer.
Fleas are virtually non-existent in the winter so to protect your dog or cat from the fleas, have them wear a flea collar all year around. If they are protected in the winter months, the fleas won’t be able to find a home on them in the summer months. Have your dog or cat flea dipped by a groomer in March right before they start spending a lot of time outside. If your pet had one of two fleas, it would not be so bad but these one or two can lay eggs and the one or two can turn into 50 fleas or more.
Another place fleas come from is other animals, if you take your dog to places where other animals are, such as a dog park, then chances are your dog is going to get fleas. Just because your dog doesn’t have them doesn’t mean another dog can’t give you fleas. Remember only the dog is protected, you are not. Fleas have no preference when landing on a dog or a human. Their food source is blood.
A place where you may overlook when it comes to fleas is the outside. Fleas jump on dogs or humans to get their blood. For example, if you are playing with your dog in your backyard that is covered with grass, guess what, chances are you will bring in at least one flea. Spray your yard with insecticides in the summer and spring months.
Keep your lawn watered, fleas hate water. Pull weeds or bushes that are dead, fleas like to hide in brushes. Basically you want to keep your lawn flea free, see your local home and garden center and see what sprays they have that will help with flea and pest control for your lawn and bushes. If you know where they come from then you can get a better handle on how to get rid of them.
